The Transcendence of Memory
Baert Gallery is pleased to inaugurate our new gallery location in Melrose Hill with a group exhibition, bringing together artists whose practices investigate the shifting relationships between body, memory, perception and landscape, all exploring the psychological throughline of these subjects. Working across a variety of media, The Transcendence of Memory presents approaches that create a dialogue between the physical and the imagined, the intimate and the expansive.
Each artist in the exhibition offers a distinct way of navigating the uncertainty of transformation. Atmospheric landscape and reimagined notions of the sublime lend to a deeper investigation of our place in the natural world. Personal reflections on both the corporeal and psychological aspects of the human form transcend the individual, touching on notions of collective memory and a porous relationship with the environments we inhabit.
The investigation of consciousness and the body throughout these artists’ practices transcend space and time. References to ancient wars and the historical moment contrast with contemporary introspection and consideration for the physicality of the form, its individual history, and how that history has the potential to expand beyond a singular entity. Through sweeping, gestural brush strokes, energetic painted fields, and dimensional depictions of collective celebratory practices, this exhibition brings forth the concept that we are each enmeshed with a force larger than ourselves.
Melinda Braathen (b. 1985, Oslo, Norway) lives and works in Los Angeles. She earned her BFA from Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY, US in 2007. Her recent exhibitions include Soft Bodies, UC Santa Barbara, CA, US (2025); Atmosphere, Baert Gallery, Los Angeles, CA, US (2024); Charged Bodies, Golsa, Oslo, Norway (2023); Alice Folker, Copenhagen, Denmark (2023); Currents, Baert Gallery, Los Angeles, CA, US (2022). Ji Won Cha (b. 1997, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea) lives and works in London. She earned her BFA in Painting from RISD and her MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art. Cheung Tsz Hin (b. 1987, Hong Kong) obtained his Bachelor of Integrated BBA (minor in Fine Arts) from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2010, and a Master of Fine Arts in Taiwan in 2014. Cheung has taken part in an artist in residency programme held by Listhus SES in Iceland in 2018. Paul Lam (b. 1953) was born in Vietnam to Chinese parents. Lam lives and works in Los Angeles. Anna Lugovska (b. 1996, Kyiv, Ukraine) is a visual artist based between Basel and London. Her education includes a Master’s program in Painting at the Royal College of Art in London (2026) and Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees (2019) in monumental painting from the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture in Kyiv, as well as training at the T. Shevchenko State Art School. Anna has participated in multiple international exhibitions in Switzerland, the UK, the USA, China, Montenegro, the UAE, and Ukraine. Her artworks are part of private collections worldwide. Anna’s artist residencies include Acentric Space, Shanghai, China (2025); Atelier Mondial, Basel, Switzerland (2022); Made in Chernobyl, Chernobyl, Ukraine (2019); Art Optimism, Newburgh, NY, USA (2018); and Artists for the Museums of Montenegro, Kotor, Montenegro (2016).
H.E. Morris (b. 1989, USA) is an artist based in London, UK. She received her BA from Hampshire College (2011), her MFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of Iowa (2016), an MA in Contemporary Art Theory from Goldsmiths, University of London (2019), and completed her PhD in Philosophy and Fine Art at Newcastle University (2025). Liz Stringer (b. 1993) is an artist and arts administrator based in Los Angeles and received her BFA and BS from UC San Diego and her MFA from UC Irvine. Liz has participated in multiple exhibitions across California. Her artworks are part of many private collections. Liz’s artist residencies include AMOCA, Long Beach, CA, USA (2026); Center for Medical Humanities Scholarship, Irvine, CA, USA (2023). She has been awarded the UCI Graduate Student Research and Travel Grant (2022/23); Claire Trevor School of Art Scholarship (2022); Medici Scholarship Summer Award (2022); Russell Foundation Grant (2015).
AlixeTurner (b. 1989, Gien, France) received an MFA in Painting from the Yale School of Art and a B.A. in International Development and Communications from McGill University. She attended Skowhegan School of Paintings and Sculpture in 2025 and is a recipient of the Dean’s Travel Fellowship and the Art YAF Scholarship. Jiatong Yuan (b. 1994, Liaoning, China) is an artist based in London. She graduated from the MA Painting programme at the Royal College of Art in 2026, where she was awarded the Basil H. Alkazzi Scholarship Award. She also holds an MA in Art & Ecology from Goldsmiths, University of London (2024). Jiatong’s work has been shown internationally in exhibitions including Irritation and Flow, Kira Streletzki, Berlin, Germany, 2026; London Writes Itself, LBF Contemporary, London, UK, 2026; The Drunken Boat, Haricot Gallery, London, UK, 2026; Daphne's Daughters, Mey Gallery, Los Angeles, US, 2025. Her work has been collected by the FAMM museum.
