Founded by husband-duo Thomas Martinez Pilnik and Jake Cavallo, Feia celebrates failure, brings people together, and curates beautiful spaces with unconventional features
Feia, literally meaning Ugly in Portuguese (and in Spanish spelled Fea), is more than just an insult. It expresses curiosity, intrigue, excitement, novelty, beauty, bemusement, and everything in between.
Pilnik - raised in London by Brazilian parents - grew up hearing the phrase “Ai, Que Coisa Feia!” throughout his childhood. It could describe a reaction his mum had while he bit his nails, a scraggle-toothed dog walking down the street, or even a stunningly opulent piece of art sitting at the Tate Modern.
We aim to capture that all with Feia. Through exhibitions, events, dinners, workshops, and more, we will surprise, delight, and sometimes even disgust. That is the whole point after all. Feia is in the construction process of a brand new 1200 square foot gallery building in Highland Park, Los Angeles. Once open, it will be the site of cutting edge exhibitions featuring contemporary artists from both LA and around the world.
